Meet Nubia DuVall Wilson, Founder of Cielo Consulting, LLC and Co-Founder of Starfury Productions…

@Nubiadwilson & LINkedin

Number of children:

2 - Ella is 8 and Luke is 7 (15 months apart!!)

list 3 ways that being a parent has positively influenced your life:

1) Having kids gave me the guts to quit my job that I didn't want anymore and do my own thing–I always wanted to for years but was too scared. I had a 1 year old and a 2 year old and I needed to be able to work from home as much as possible, so I started Cielo Consulting in Sept 2015.

2) Ironically 10 months into Cielo Consulting, while I was growing my business and loving being an entrepreneur, my daughter (then 3 at the time) triggered my childhood trauma of being sexually abused around the age of 3. World fell apart, but it set the ball in motion to get me into TV and film. In Nov 2020, I started a tv and film production company with 2 partners called Starfury Productions (it had been a dream to be in the industry since childhood).

3) Remembering my trauma and going to therapy, facing it and healing it has made me a better business owner, leader and community member. I created nubiaduvall.com and I speak publicly (on social, at events, interviews, etc) about PTSD and how to manage your trauma while thriving professionally.

Please share any tips or insights you can offer to other working parents.

Don't ignore your mental health needs, if you do, you won't be able to work at your full capacity. Speak openly to your partner about how he/she can support you if you are struggling with your mental health--you can't do it alone and your partner might not know how to help, you need to have ongoing open (non-judgmental) conversations. Vulnerability can be a strength. Use a joint email address that gets forward to each parents' personal or work email for all school/kid matters so that not one parent has the responsibility of "keeping up". Use your calendar and invites with your partner so both know the daily schedule. I have so many tips!

What’s your latest working parent win and/or other important info you would like to share?

We have survived the school year without a daily babysitter since January and we will not be hiring one in the new year. Thanks to my work schedule and a neighbor who has the same age youngest as my kids (7/8) we are able to tag team to bring the kids home on days the weather is bad (there is no bus for us, kids can walk home and it takes about 15 minutes). I work while I take the kids to activities when needed and we save money. I love to travel so we are taking the kids on multiple vacations this year which to me is worth more for the memory making than having a babysitter for 3 hours a day after school.
